    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: SLOW COOKER RECIPES – 50 Delicious Time Saving Slow Cooker Recipes (Kindle Edition)

I obtained this book when it was free for the Kindle.

This is a different collection of slow cooker recipes than the one I reviewed previously, and there is different information in the tips section, as well. As with other books from this imprint, the “tips” section has some good information, although the writing does not seem polished. There are fewer typos than some of the other books I’ve reviewed, although there is a reference to “pleas(ing) the pallet.” The tip regarding browning meat first is a bit inconsistent – it says it doesn’t have to be browned, but then says it enhances the flavor and appearance and seems to encourage doing so.

The book doesn’t have any kind of “about us” section, which would tell us who these folks are, what their credentials are, why we should trust their information, how they tested the recipes, where they got the recipes, why they like them, etc. None of the current 4- and 5-star reviews are from an “Amazon Verified Purchase,” which makes me wonder a bit. The description says the recipes are “hand-picked.” This indicates to me that there is no one really “behind” these recipes, but the cover picture and names are used to give a consistent impression.

The description also says “This cookbook also includes information on our famous ‘CopyCat Restaurant Recipes’.” It includes a link to a website where the “information” is a sales pitch, essentially, and where that cookbook may be purchased for $32.95. There is no mention of R. King or M. Smith or Country Cooking on that website, but rather “Divine Recipes.”

The Herb Dumpling Turkey Soup recipe appears to be incomplete, as it does not give information about cooking the dumplings. The Smoked Ham Bean Soup calls for dry beans as an ingredient, but doesn’t indicate the beans should be soaked or otherwise prepared in any way first. This has not been a successful method of cooking beans, for me – I always soak or boil dry beans before cooking. One recipe calls for adding cornstarch and cooking for an additional hour. In my experience, cornstarch breaks down quickly, usually after about 10 minutes of cooking. I now thicken with flour or use cornstarch to thicken only shortly before serving. This has improved my success, as adding cornstarch too early has resulted in some nasty, gluey messes. These issues do call the overall accuracy of the collection into question for me and are the reason for 2 versus 3 stars for this book.

As mentioned in other reviews, this is a collection of slow cooker recipes. Don’t expect a lot of fluff, just recipes. Really, what more could you want from a recipe book? The recipes have turned out well, and since my girlfriend and I both work long hours, we really rely on our slow cooker a lot. We haven’t been disappointed and consider the book very worth the price.
