I do think a more accurate title would be “main dishes” rather than “dinner,” since side dishes aren’t really included in the 20- to 30-minute estimate. Frequently, my main dish is 10-15 minutes to make, but the side dishes take a bit more time and effort.

For example, the first recipe is for a stir fry. Absolutely quick and easy, sounds delicious. However, the suggestion is to serve it over cooked brown rice. White rice takes 20-30 minutes for me to cook, counting the time to bring the pot to a boil. Brown rice takes longer to cook than that, unless one is using a quick-cook version.

That’s part of the reason for the 2 stars. The other reason is one recipe is unusable as written because it’s missing an ingredient, and another recipe, while usable with some common sense and guesswork, is missing information about a key ingredient.

The unusable one: The Potato-Horseradish-Crusted fish recipe does not list potatoes in the ingredient list – no quantity or type or preparation. The instructions say “mix the potatoes.”

The chicken and white bean salad sounds great – however, the recipe doesn’t include information on how much chicken (and I’m guessing the “30 minutes or less” assumes that it’s already cooked).

Far less significant but noted: It would be nice if the recipe referring to “pepitas” explained what they were and how to toast them. A cucumber salad would be a side dish for my family, not a main dish or “dinner.”

Now, this particular quibble doesn’t affect the star rating at all, just an observation. The conclusion says “Just basic stuff you probably already have in your home!” Okay, granted, for a lot of the recipes, this is true for me. However, some call for ingredients that are a bit more outside my norm. I have a rather boring and budget-limited pantry. I don’t keep pepitas on hand, capers, anchovy paste, rice wine, dry sherry, or sesame oil. Several of the recipes would require specific shopping, and since I don’t often enough to keep them on hand, I’d be less likely to prepare those.

Over the past few years we’ve gotten away from family dinners due to everyone’s hectic work and school schedules. The recipes in this book – all ready in less than 30 minutes – will hopefully get us back to sitting around the dinner table and enjoying family meal time even during our crazy work/school week!
